Genetic Defects

There have been a few cases reported of abnormalities of the distal leg/foot and dew claws in Shorthorn calves in the States. These cases are not "classic" mule foot as the claws (toes) are not fused, typically the calf has inappropriately placed dew claws and may have some other slight curvature or deformity at the base of the leg that makes it somewhat difficult for them to mobilize. The American Shorthorn Association has produced a pdf file with more information and photos. Click here to view the file. Breeders are encouraged to submit samples of any suspected cases, as per directions on the ASA site. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
ASA Genetic Defect Information

In almost any genetic population genetic defects show up from time to time. Recessive genetic defects known as Tibial Hemimelia (TH) and Pulmonary hypoplasia with anasarca (PHA) show up in certain bloodlines of Shorthorns. If you use the following link to the American Shorthorn Association site you can find out more information about TH and PHA.

Canadian Breeders who wish to test for the defects can submit samples to Igenity in Calgary, AB.

To use the Igenity option, breeders will need to contact Igenity at 1-888-637-4251, or www.igenity.com.  Animal identification is required to order sample submission kits, hair cards and forms - samples are to be sent to their Calgary office with completed information and payment.  They will look after
submitting the sample to their lab.  Results can be expected within three to four weeks.  The cost for the genetic abnormality tests through Igenity is $26 Canadian - an information sheet on their pricing, profiling and other tests available is downloadable in pdf format on this page.  Acceptable tissue samples for the Igenity tests include whole blood in an EDTA tube, blood on an FTA card, hair follicles in an Igenity hair card, semen or tissue in a typifix sample tag.
