In today’s Canadian cattle industry producer’s more than ever need every economic advantage they can find. That is why more and more commercial producers are turning to the Shorthorn breed. The Shorthorn has always been known for its maternal abilities. When the European breeds first arrived in Canada Agriculture Canada conducted intensive tests at heir test stations on British breed European breed crosses. The number one cross was the Shorthorn /Simmental followed by the Shorthorn/ Charolais. Today with input costs becoming more and more of a factor commercial producers are looking for the advantage the Shorthorn cross provides in low maintenance good milking mother cows.

The added advantage of the Shorthorn cross is that the steers produced have an excellent rate of gain, good feed conversion and increased marbling and tenderness.

With all these advantages more commercial producers will be incorporating Shorthorn genetics to help with their bottom line. At the same time more purebred producers are adding a Shorthorn division to their seed stock producing program.
